Make It Reign | Rachael Blumberg

05 June 2018

As part of our commitment to building a community around empowerment, Ranavat Botanics celebrates strong women who rule: women who stand at the helm of their personal and professional lives, determine their own definitions of success, and don’t wait for the world to assign their worth.

For the month of June, we’re shining a spotlight on inspiring women who are carving out their own paths in life as founders, CEOs, and industry disruptors. These are the go-getters cultivating dynamic careers in line with their passions. The trailblazers igniting new paths in unlikely industries. The motivators fueling others to rise to the occasion and realize their dreams. These are women who Make It Reign.

Our first CEO in the Make It Reign series is PLATEFIT founder and mom-of-two Rachael Blumberg. Chatting about everything from her business to beauty to two children, the fitness entrepreneur shares inspiring words about her commitment to making time for herself and breaks down misconceptions about work-life balance.

Platefit

Why did you decide to found PLATEFIT?

To help others achieve health and wellness.   To help woman feel good in their bodies, build strength and gain self confidence.  To achieve their desired goals. Welcome everyone into the PLATEFIT family.

To also create a business my kids would be proud of.   I love knowing they get to see their Mama working on something that gives me passion, purpose and joy.

How would you describe your personal approach to wellness?

Wellness is a lifelong commitment for me.   My journey started when I was young. I started as a swimming and continued through college as a division one waterpolo player.  The journey into PLATEFIT started 15 years ago.

I love to feel good in my body!   I love of exercise and I also value what I put in my body and on my body.

My approach to wellness, in terms of fitness, would be the Power Plate itself since it’s really good for the elasticity of the skin, increasing circulation, detoxing, strengthening and making the body function better.

My husband also works for Erewhon Market—he does all the expansion and development—so our house is always full of really yummy, good food and products that are organic and really healthy for you. So when it comes to wellness, we sort of live it, day to day.

How has your beauty and wellness routine changed since becoming a mother?

I'm committed to taking care of myself.  I believe I must fill my tank in order to be good for others.

When I first became a mother, I wondered how it was all going to work out. How was I going to continue to do me and still be a mother?   I decided from the beginning, continuing to take care of me was important. So the commitment to actually make time for myself—by spending money on manis or help or whatever that may be—is something that’s sort of a non-negotiable in my life now. If I feel empty, then I’m not able to then give to my kids. I consistently do my own workout and get massages when I need to. I also meditate, so I do a daily meditation twice a day for 20 minutes, which I also feel is a huge huge part of wellness, fitness, and beauty. It makes me feel rested, it makes me look rested.

What self-care practices make you feel most confident?

My meditation first and foremost. It centers me. It happens first thing in the morning for 20 minutes and then it happens in the afternoon. It’s part of my schedule so I don’t schedule things in lieu of it. Meditation sets me up for the day.

I also love to sweat at least once a day.  I love getting manicures and I love reading.  Massages and travel.   Time with my girlfriends! These things make me happy, bring me peace and fill me up.

Do you have any daily mantras or affirmations that keep you motivated and driven?

Oprah!!!!  This woman’s voice alone calms my soul.  She speaks directly to my heart.  This below keeps me grounded and grateful.

"I live in the space of thankfulness—and for that, I have been rewarded a million times over. I started out giving thanks for small things, and the more thankful I became, the more my bounty increased. That’s because—for sure—what you focus on expands. When you focus on the goodness in your life, you create more of it.”

– Oprah Winfrey, What I Know For Sure

What lessons do you hope to teach your children?

That life is about who you are and that beauty comes from the inside. To find their own connection within.  To find their passion, purpose and joy.

I hope to instill in my children self-confidence, love of themselves, and the drive to be useful and helpful to other people.

What are some misconceptions about motherhood, success, and work-life balance?

Everyone always says how do you do it all? And honestly, I feel like I don’t do it all, because I don’t. I’m a big believer that you have to hire the right amount of help. People you trust, people who are in line with your goals and your belief systems. I wouldn’t be able to be a successful business owner if I didn’t have the right staff at my studio. And I wouldn’t be able to be a good mother if I didn’t have the right staff at my house. I feel like the secret to work-life balance is delegating, delegating, delegating as much as possible, so then you can be successful at both. And the misconception is that you’re going to always feel successful at both. When I’m working, sometimes I feel guilty about not being at home and when I’m at home, I feel guilty about not being at work. It really comes down to taking a deep breath and knowing that we’re all doing the best we can at any given moment. I don’t think you can do anything the wrong way. So I’m just taking it one day at a time and trying to be the best mother I can and trying to be the best business owner.

What advice do you have for other women looking to become their own boss?

Follow your heart. Go for it with everything you have. Don’t give up and do everything you can from wherever you are.
